Chapter 14

“Open comms, Exxu. Well, what is the loot?” Vydenn asked as Exxu complied. No one answered him. And no one maybe wanted to. Then, the alliance ships began to move down toward the carcass…. Exxu couldn’t gauge a reaction not being able to see the boss, but his next words came in cold and slow, “Kill them. You idiots! Kill them all!” As one, the remaining Infinity ships turned and began attacking the alliance ships that were descending to collect their rewards. Some turned to fight back, but the rest kept moving downwards.

Unsure what action was required, Exxu hadn’t moved. But now, Vydenn spoke to him, “Take us up to the warship Exxu. We’re done here.” His face drained of blood, but he obeyed. The ship turned and began chugging its way toward the atmosphere. His eyes kept nervously glancing at the alliance warship, but it was too preoccupied with its prize to notice a refugee mining ship running away. One last look in his rear monitor showed Infinity’s fighters being overcome with the alliance’s show of force. But the communication channel remained silent as he exited the planet’s atmosphere into space.

The fighting outside the planet was doubly fierce compared to inside. The alliance had four warships. Infinity had only brought its behemoth one, though it was holding its own along with the Infinity forces attacking the enemy fighters. Upon leaving the atmosphere, a squad of Infinity fighters immediately broke off and moved to escort them.

Opening comms, Exxu said, “Tell them to leave us alone. Alliance thinks we’re just a mining ship escaping the battle right now. If you escort us, then they will know there is something worth protecting on board.”

“Not willing to take the risk,” Reinheld said as the fighters kept moving toward them.

“I am willing to give his idea a try,” Vydenn called to his right-hand man. On the boss’ word, the fighter escort melted away, breaking into two and rejoining the fighting. “Follow us in, boys. We’re done here.”

Exxu wanted to object, but he had known it would be coming. He knew Vydenn would leave the forces who had failed below to lose everything they had invested in the game. They had ceased to exist the moment they had failed. Even though it really hadn’t been their fault. It had been all luck for the alliance fleet and no such luck for Infinity. Like life, there was a gamble in every decision. Vydenn and Vydenn alone was the person responsible for the failure.

As a pair of engaged fighters streaked his way, Exxu dropped down below them, watching as the alliance one lit up in fire before tumbling off into empty space. The closer they got to the large ship, the thicker the fighting. Exxu found himself picking up speed, knowing the alliance wouldn’t be able to mistake his intentions anymore. Any sane mining pilot would have steered the other direction, away from the fighting. The Gelty throttled forwards, zipping around the other fighters and closing in on the hangar of the Infinity.
